Vanderbilt University is a leading private university, and its Peabody College of Education has been considered the leading teaching college in the country by many.  The University was founded in 1873 and is named after Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad tycoon, who provided the initial endowment.  In 1978, Vanderbilt merged with Peabody College, which itself was founded in 1785.
