The University of Pennsylvania (“Penn”) was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1751, who also served as the first president of the university. Franklin of course was a renowned inventor, philosopher and journalist who went on to become one of the founders of the United States, and served as its first Ambassador to France. Penn is one of the eight Ivy League universities. With broad academic offerings, including engineering, business and Veterinary programs, it has one of the most well-rounded academic environments among that group. Penn was the home of the first large-scale digital computer, named ENIAC.
